Happy Memorial Day

Freedom Is Not Free
Kelly Strong
I watched the flag pass by one day. It fluttered in the breeze.
A young Marine saluted it, and then he stood at ease.
I looked at him in uniform so young, so tall, so proud,
he'd stand out in any crowd.

I thought how many men like him had fallen through the years.
How many died on foreign soil? How many mothers' tears?
How many pilots' planes shot down? How many died at sea?
How many foxholes were soldiers' graves?
No, freedom isn't free.

I heard the sound of TAPS one night, when everything was still.
I listened to the bugler play and felt a sudden chill.
I wondered just how many times that TAPS had meant "Amen,"
When a flag had draped a coffin of a brother or a friend.

I thought of all the children, of the mothers and the wives,
Of fathers, sons and husbands with interrupted lives.
I thought about a graveyard at the bottom of the sea
Of unmarked graves in Arlington.
No, freedom isn't free.

Wishing everyone a Blessed Memorial Day.  May "God Bless America" again and bless our troops and their families.

Thank You Cards for Operation Write Home

These are two cards I made to send to Operation Write Home for our heroes.  One is feminine and one is masculine.  OWH is having an awesome blog hop for the Memorial Day weekend.  Check it out here.  You could win a prize for hopping a long. There are 146 participants, some companies also, and a lot of inspiration.

I made my first card following Color Throwdown Challenge #243 and  Karen's Sweet Sunday Sketch challenge. The card base and sentiment panel are white.  The sentiment and yellow flower are from Verve stamps.  The flower is from On Occasion and is stamped in Daffodil Delight ink on DD designer paper, and I sponged the edges also.  The sentiment stamp is a little goodie I got free in one of my orders from Verve. The frame is from Our Daily Bread Designs stamped in Mememto Tuxedo Black ink and cut out with Spellbinders Lable 26. I trimmed around the stamped image and mounted it on a Black mat cut with the same die. The striped paper is Marina Mist and the ribbon is also Marina Mist.  I punched the black border with SU Scallop Border punch.  The Wild Wasabi leaves are punch with SU Bird Builder punch.

I would also like to include my first card in Linda's Catered Crop Mellow Yellow Recipe Swap since it has Daffodil Delight as the main ingredient.  Catered Crop Recipe Swap Button

The second card uses SU Baha Breeze and Basic Black CS. The designer paper is from a retired pack.  I punched the stars with a SU punch and the "thanks" is cut with a Cuttlebug die I have had for quite awhile.  I saw it used on one of the cards in the OWH hop and had to dig it out to use it.  The brads are from my stash.  The center BB panel is embossed with a harlequin EF and I also pierced around the edges.

Thanks for stopping by.   I appreciate your comments.

Blue Christmas for Merry Monday #63

This is my card for this week's Merry Monday #63 sketch challenge.   The card base is some older DCWV cardstock from my stash.  The ornament is an Inkadinkado stamp and is embossed in white on some of the blue CS.  The snowflake DSP is from Recollections Festiva 6x6 christmas pad.  The ribbon is white with silver edging, but it looks bluish in the photo.  The sentiment is from SU More Merry Messages and the white panel is embossed with SU Snowburst EF (I decided to use it since the DSP had snowflakes on it).

Thanks for stopping by.  I appreciate your comments.

Hello for MFTWSC125 and JUGS#189

This is my card for this week's MFTWSC125 and Just Us Girls #189.  This is my first time participating in the JUGS challenge.  It was a color challenge this week.

My card base is SU Crumb Cake, next is a layer of Sahara Sand DSP from a retired pad.  The flower DSP is from Teresa Collins Fabrications-Canvas 6x6 pad, matted with Crumb Cake and the edges are inked with Pumpkin Pie ink.  The flower is made with MFT Blueprints 3 die-namics, cut with some retired SU DSP.  I cut beween the flower petals, inked the edges and shaped them with a bone folder.  The flower center is Crumb Cake and the edges are inked with CC ink.  I used MFT Leaf-Filled Flourish cut in Crumb Cake to add a little texture.  The sentiment is from MFT LJD-On The Line, stamped in Pumpkin Pie ink and cut with MFT Fishtail Flags Stax and matted with a Crumb Cake Fishtail Flags Stax Layers die.

A Very Merry Christmas - Merry Monday #62

This is my card for Merry Monday #62 sketch challenge.  Check out the challenge by clicking here.   I love playing in the challenge each week as I am getting a lot of my Christmas cards done early.

For my card I used a cute reindeer stamp by Recollections from Michael's dollar bin.  This is the first time I have inked him up.  I stamped him on X-Press It Blending Card and colored him with Copics, then cut him out with MFT Circle Stax and used SU Early Espresso for the mat.  All mats are Early Espresso.  The card base is Canvas Corp Heavy Cardstock.  The DSP is from Echo Park Very Merry Christmas 6x6 pad.  The sentiment is from SU More Merry Messages, and is cut with MFT Fishtail Flags Stax.  The brads are from JoAnn's.

Thanks for stopping by.  I appreciate your comments.

Sweet and Sassy - MFT Scrap Sketch #7

This is my layout for My Favorite Things Scrap Sketch 7. You can read all about it here in their SCS Forum.

These are photos of my "Sweet and Sassy" great-granddaughter.  Lately she has been a real poser for the camera.  I wanted to take her picture because she was dressed so cute and she immediately posed so I got some cute photos and had to scrap them.  I got this cute PI Feeling Sassy because it reminds me of her.  I stamped the image with Mememto Tuxedo Black and colored her with Copics.  I had some Zebra print DSP, copied it and reduced it way down to have it small enough to stamp her top on and cut it out.  Her hair bow is also paper-pieced.  The pink check & pink dotted papers are some older Making Memories paper from my stash.  I used SU Basic Black for my layout base and mats. I sewed around the edges of the pink paper in a zig-zag stitch, but it doesn't show up in the photo.
The panel for the cute PI image is cut with a die from MFT Blueprints 1 Dies  and I inked around the edges with SU Bashful Blue ink while it was still in the die.  I added the grass following Inge's tutorial here.   I added the Old Olive Leaf-Filled Flourish becasue of the green bush in the photos.  The sentiments are from 3 different MFT stamps sets:  PI-Feeling Sassy, LLD-Document It -Right This Way and  Captured Memories and are mounted with foam tape.  The buttons are from my stash and tied with some crochet thread.

Thanks for stopping by.  I appreciate you taking the time to leave me a comment.

Happy Staming and Scrapping,

A CHEERFUL HEART

I am combining two challenges for my card,  The Paper Players #145 and MFTWSC124.

My card base and the MFT Heart Doily are SU Raspberry Ripple.  The DSP is Gumball Green and Midnight Muse.  The white panels are Canvas Corp Heavy Cardstock and the large panel is embossed with SU Fancy Fan EF.  I love this sentiment from the new MFT Cheerful Blessings set and stamped it in Midnight Muse.  I also added a little flourish from SU Simple Friendship (retired) stamped in Midnight Muse and added some of the hearts cut from the Heart Doily.  I was going to add a flower for the little circle element, but thought the hearts went better with the sentiment.  I also added some Baker's Twine around the sentiment panel.

Congrats Grad

The Dynamic Duos Challenge blog is celebrating their one year anniversary.  To participate you can make a card with any of their previous color combos.  I chose DD#49, Basic Gray & Basic Black to make this graduation card.  The image is by Stampabilities and I colored the tassel with marker.  The chevron paper is My Mind's Eye and of course I used SU Basic Gray and Basic Black CS.  I embossed the Basic Gray panel with  Quikutz Polka Dots EF.  I added some Basic Black grossgrain ribbon across the seam of the two papers.  The sentiment is done on my computer and cut out with MFT Fishtail Flags Stax Die-namics and Layers. The card base and banners are Canvas Corp Heavy Weight CS.

Seize The Birthday #16

Here is my card for this week's Seize The Birthday #16 challenge.

The card base is SU Pink Pirouette CS.  The white panel is Canvas Corp Heay Weight CS and is embossed with SU Lacey Brocade EF.  I used the debossed side.  The MFT Upsy Daisy is cut from SU Pink Pirouette CS, the center is Soft Suede and the leaves are Certainly Celery.  The ribbon is some retired Soft Suede dotted ribbon.  The sentiments is from SU Itty Bitty Banners stamped in Soft Suede ink and matted on Soft Suede CS.  I cut both out by hand.

That's it for my card.  Thanks for stopping by.  I appreciate your comments.

Thinking of You Makes Me Happy

This is my card for this week's MFTWSC#123.
The sentiment is from MFT You Make My Day.  For such a sweet sentiment I wanted to add some cheerful papers so I chose all the DSP from Simple Stories Summer 6x6 pad.  The card base is SU Crumb Cake CS and all the mats and sentiment panel are MFT Whip Cream CS.  The flowers are made from the smaller flower in MFT Blueprints 3 Die-namics.  I cut between each petal and shaped them with my fingers.  I also sponged SU So Saffron ink around the edge of each petal. The center of the flowers are also cut with the Blueprints 3 Dies from some cork looking paper from the same pad.  The banner is cut with MFT Fishtail Flag Stax.  I added the faux stitching around the sentiment panel with my Zig pen and a ruler.

I have started making cards for Operation Write Home and this card will be going in that box.  They make cards to send to our military men and women overseas so they will have cards to send home to their loved ones.  You can check it out here.

Thanks for stopping by.  I appreciate your comments.

Graduation cards

Here are two graduation cards I made last week.  I used these two sweet digital images from Bugaboo Stamps and use blue and white which are our school colors.  Both images are printed on X-Press It Blending Card and colored with Copics. Card bases are Canvas Corp Heavy Cardstock from Hobby Lobby.

Boy Grad:  After coloring the image, I cut him out and mounted him with foam dimensionals on a Spellbinder's Classic Oval die cut from MME DSP.  The light blue DSP is some older paper I have.  The blue mats are SU Brilliant Blue CS.  The sentiment on both cards is from SU Itty Bitty Banners stamped in Brilliant Blue ink and cut out by hand.  I added a Metallic Dots from JoAnn's to each corner of the BB CS strip.  I stamped each number individually in the "2013" with MFT LLD-Journal It Calendar Basics.

Girl Grad:  After coloring the image with Copics, I cut her out with Spellbinder's Classic Ovals and matted her on SB Scalloped Oval.  All blue mats are some older DSP from my stash, the other side is a print.  The large white panel is stamped in Basic Gray ink with SU En Francis background stamp.  The decorative strip is made with SU Dotted Scallop Ribbon Border punch.  I added 4 rhinestones colored with a Copic in the 4 corners.  Again, the 2013" is stamped with MFT LLD-Journal It Calendar Basics in Mememto Tuxedo Black ink.

Freshly Made Sketches 85 - Happy Father's Day

ETA:  Yea, my card won Queen of Clean at Freshly Made Sketches.
I have been busy with family stuff this past week and was taken out to lunch yesterday for an early Mother's Day, but was able to get a few cards done.  I made this Father's Day card following this week's Freshly Made Sketches but turned it sideways.  I like the circle with the flags sticking out.  I used a new stamp set from Our Daily Bread Designs called The Waves on the Sea for the boat image and the sentiment.  I stamped the image in Mememto Tuxedo Black ink, colored it with Copics and cut it out with MFT Circle Stax 1 & 2.  I used a white Signo pen to color the waves around the boat and also a few places in the water.  I used a punched scallop circle and sponged the clouds with SU Bashful Blue ink.  For the sentiment I masked each word and stamped it in Mememto Black ink and cut out each one with MFT Fishtail Flags Stax and Fishtail Flags Stax Layers.  The image and flags are both mounted with foam dimensionals.

The card base and white panels are Canvas Corp. Heavy Cardstock and the DSP is from the MME Moments 6x6 pad.  Card size is 4-1/4 x 5-1/2.

Thanks for stopping by.  I appreciate your comments.

Happy Stamping,

Merry Monday #61

Here is my card for this week's Merry Monday #61 sketch challenge at Always Playing With Paper blog.

I used SU Bravo Burgunday CS for the mats and Canvas Corp. Heavy CS for the white panels and card base.  The main panel is embossed with SU Vintage Wallpaper EF.  The poinsettia is from Flourishes Poinsettia and Boxwood.  I stamped the poinsettia and leaves in Mememto Tuxedo Black on some X-Press It Blending Card, colored them with Copics and cut them out.  I glued them on the embossed panel, cutting some of the left side of the poinsettia off. The sentiment is from SU  Contempo Christmas, stamped in Mememto Tuxedo Black ink.  It is mounted with foam dimensionals.

Thanks for stopping by.  I appreciate your comments.

Another Mother's Day Card

Here is another Mother's Day card I made this week.  The card base and the top panel are Canvas Corp. Heavy Cardstock.  I used Spellbinders Romantic Rectangles to cut the white panel, added some Recollections Rhinestone/Pearls, SU Riding Hood Red Ribbon and a Prima flower.  The sentiment s from SU All Holidays stamped in Mememto Tuxedo Black ink.  The DSP is from MME, but not very much of it shows.  It does match the SU ribbon though.

I am entering this in the following challenges for Mother's Day:

Happy Mother's Day - The Paper Players #144

This is my card for The Paper Players #144 Mother's Day challenge.  The card base is Canvas Corp. Heavy Cardstock, next is a mat of SU Crumb Cake and then the SU Pink Pirouette CS.  The PP panel is embossed with SU Elegant Lines EF.  I added some SU Pearls to the little circles in the embossing.  The butterflies from SU Papillon Potpourri were stamped in SU Raspberry Ripple ink and sponged with some PP ink.  I cut them out and adhered them with some Tombow glue to just the body of the butterflies to leave their wings free.  Then I added 3 little pearls to the bodies.  The sentiment is from Verve's Love Deepens and is stamped in Mememto Tuxedo Black and punched with SU Curly Label punch.  I also punched 2 labels from Crumb Cake CS and cut one in half vertically and one in half horizontally to make the mat.

MFTWSC122 Thank You

I made a teacher thank you card following this week's MFTWSC122.  Unfortunately my internet connection has been down and I am just getting my card posted.  I think I barely made the cut off time.

For my card I used the MFT ALM Apple For Teacher stamping her with Mememto Tuxedo Black ink on X-Press It Blending Card and colored her with Copics. I paper-pieced her skirt & top with some of the DSP and SU Always Artichoke CS.  I cut her out and added her (with foam dimensionals) to a circle and mat cut with MFT Circle Stax 1 and Circle Stax 2.  The SU Naturals Ivory panel is embossed with the Tim Holtz Brick EF and sponged with SU Crumb Cake ink.  The sentiment is from the same set but I cut it apart to fit in my circle. It is stamped with Mememto TB ink on Naturals Ivory and sponged with Crumb Cake ink also.  The Riding Hood Red panel is stamped with a retired SU alphabet background stamp.  I thought it added some texture and went with the school theme.  The DSP is some I have had in my stash for a looooong time. :)  The mats are SU Always Artichoke & Riding Hood Red CS. The card base is SU Naturals Ivory.

OWH NSD Challenge - Hey Dude

I am following the Operation Write Home NSC challenges today and on Paula's Blog she had a challenge to use a sketch and make a kid's card.  I used Bonus Sketch #1 from OWH.  For my card I used a new stamp I got yesterday at Hobby Lobby.  It is Skateboard Kiddo by Stampendous.  I stamped him on some X-Press It Blending Card with Mememto Tuxedo Black ink.  He is colored with Copics and Promarkers.  I paper-pieced the skateboard by stamping it on some wood design paper from MME Fiddlesticks 6x6 paper pad, cut it out and glued it on the stamped image.  I inked the edges of the image panel with some SU Bashful Blue ink, and inked the sentiment panel also.  I created the sentiment on my computer and it is mounted on foam dimensionals. The DSP are from MME Twinkle Twinkle Little Boy 12x12 pad and are textured and shiny, although it doesn't show up in the photo.  The white CS card base is Canvas Corp. Heavy Cardstock and the mats are SU Early Espresso.

That's it for my card.  Thanks for stopping by my blog.  I appreciate your comments.

Dynamic Duo Birthday Wishes

I made my card using this week's Dynamic Duos color challenge and last week's Freshly Made Sketches sketch.  I love the softness 0f Blushing Bride.  I wouldn't have thought of combing these two colors, but I think they make a pretty flower.

My card base is SU Crumb Cake and the mats are Blushing Bride.  I embossed the white panel with SU Vintage Wallpaper EF.  The leaves are stamped in Wild Wasabi ink and the 2 step flowers are stamped in Blushing Bride and overstamped with Calypso Coral.  I cut them out and mounted them with foam dimensionals.  The sentiment is from SU Occasional Quotes stamped in Calypso Coral.  It is mounted with foam dimensionals also.  I added the Blushing Bride ribbon across the center, added the Blushing Bride DSP panel, image panel, and sentiment,  and my card was done.

Thanks for stopping by my blog.  Your comments are greatly appreciated.

Happy Stamping,

JoAnn
